Times Square Valentine's Day: Couples Invited To Renew Their Vows On Red Steps

The Most Over-The-Top Romantic Way To Spend V-Day

There's going to be a lot of PDA in Times Square this Valentine's Day.

For the second year in a row, couples are invited to renew their vows on February 14 in a group ceremony on Times Square's red glass steps. The free ceremony, organized by Times Square improvement organization Times Square Alliance, will be streamed live online at 6 p.m. and will be officiated by a U.S. Coast Guard captain.

According to the Alliance, 100 couples participated in the vow renewal last year, and more than 100 twosomes have already signed up for this year's ceremony (couples can pre-register online or simply show up). There is no cap on the number of couples allowed to participate.

Alliance President Tim Tompkins told HuffPost that the romantic history of Times Square inspired them to find ways to celebrate the holiday.

“Times Square has always been about ‘free love’ in many forms -- think sailors and nurses, think New Year's Eve smooches, think Times Square's naughty past," Tompkins said.

Throughout the month of February, there will also be two public art installations on display. The first is a heart-shaped sculpture made of boards from boardwalks destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The second is an nightly three-minute presentation of "love messages" on Times Square's LED screens.

This Valentine's Day is going to be big: six million people are expected to pop the question and 83 percent plan on giving their significant other a gift, according to the latest statistics from the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker.
