At least eight people died violent deaths over the weekend in Chicago, seven of them on Saturday, one of the deadliest days the city has seen in some time.
The most recent homicide was a 25-year-old woman whose father allegedly beat her to death in her home in the city's Gresham neighborhood, DNAinfo Chicago reports. Tarika Moore was found dead in her home in the 7800 block of South Morgan Street around 7 p.m. Sunday. Charges are reportedly pending in her death.
Previously, on Saturday, the seven people killed in Chicago included 34-year-old Ronnie Chambers, whose mother had already lost her three other children -- three sons and one daughter -- to gun violence. (Visit DNAinfo for a rundown of additional weekend homicides.)
In a 2000 interview with the Chicago Tribune after the death of her third child to gun violence, Shirley Chambers told the newspaper, "I only have one child left and I'm afraid that (the killing) won't stop until he's gone too."
Ronnie Chambers was fatally shot in the head while sitting in a car early Saturday morning in the city's Lawndale neighborhood.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy will be in Washington Monday for a meeting the White House is convening on gun violence, according to ABC Chicago. Over the weekend, McCarthy also attended a Simeon-Whitney Young high school basketball game at Chicago State University, where a 17-year-old was fatally shot after a game at the same location earlier this month.
Homicides in Chicago surpassed the 500 mark for the first time since 2008 last year.
