MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell made a rather odd demand on his Tuesday MSNBC show: appoint me as Massachusetts interim senator.
Massachusetts will host a special election once John Kerry is confirmed and appointed as secretary of state, but state law requires the governor to appoint an interim senator while the special election is arranged.
During a cable news appearance, former Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank revealed that he would like Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint him as the interim senator. So O'Donnell floated his own name as a possible contender on "The Last Word." The interim senator will likely be involved with Congress' upcoming negotiation on the debt ceiling. O'Donnell was previously the Senate Finance Committee's chief of staff, and touted his past experience.
Apparently(?) sincerely, O'Donnell would like to be appointed as Massachusetts interim senator, and even offered Frank a deal. "If I become a temporary senator, maybe he can become a temporary host of a 10 p.m. program on MSNBC," he said.
Ultimately though, O'Donnell asked viewers if they think he should ask Patrick to appoint him as the state's interim senator. "I'm going to sleep on it," he said.
