Anthony Smith, a.k.a. Postmodern Negro, talks about the non-traditional Advent story in the Gospel of Mark:

"God kicks in the door of an old world. ... A whole new world is here now. This is what happens with the Advent of the Spirit to alert us, to remind us, and to invite us into this new world that has erupted, that has shown up on the scene of an old stage."

He also describes the experience of his missional community in Salisbury, NC, called Mission House and something they're calling "Bible Lab," reading through the Bible together slowly and discerning in community what to draw from the text.
