World's Largest Sponge Cake Contender Baked By Austria Town Of Seiersberg (PHOTOS)

Gadzooks, that's a lot of dessert! Pastry chefs in the Austrian town of Seiersberg spent three whole days baking the biggest sponge cake we've ever seen.

Weighing in at 2.5 tons, the cake is made with more than 3,000 eggs and is topped with about 1102 pounds (500 kilos) of blackberries, pineapple and strawberries. It measures roughly 26 x 16 feet (8 x 5 meters) -- the size of a small New York City apartment.

It's unclear if the cake was created to mark a specific event, but it does feature an edible version of the town's coat of arms and its mastermind, head chef Werner Russ, hopes it will be officially recognized by Guinness World Records officials.

Russ talked up the cake to U.K. publication Metro:

"It is a normal cake mixture, with a biscuit base, normal cream filling ... We were very proud of it ... Especially when people ate 10,000 pieces of it the next day [after] we cut it into slices."
