From film scoring to production, direction and acting, African Americans have touched many facets of the film genre.

As we approach this year’s 85th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, history has already been made with Quvenzhané Wallis' nomination as the youngest ever nominee for Best Actress in a leading role. In addition to 9-year-old’s much talked about nod, Denzel Washington is also up for Best Actor in a leading role.

Though there were years where no African-Americans were nominated (such as in 2011), we took a retrospective look at those who were. From Hattie McDaniel's historic win to Halle Berry's tearful speech, here's a look at the winner's club and some of our favorite Academy Awards moments through the years.
