After two weeks on the picket lines, teachers in south suburban Evergreen Park, Ill., early Friday arrived at a tentative strike-ending with their school district.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Evergreen Park Federation of Teachers and School District 124's board will meet Friday evening to go over the deal's specific terms, which will not be made public until it is formally ratified.
Students will return to the classroom Monday after missing eight days of school during the strike, according to ABC Chicago.
"I think everybody is happy that it is over," the board's president Kathy Rohan told CBS Chicago of the strike's end. "We are all relieved that the kids should be back in school on Monday."
The teachers' strike began last Tuesday, Oct. 2. Sticking points for the union included pay and health insurance coverage.
The striking union represents 135 teachers and 70 support staff at the district’s four elementary schools and one junior high school -- a total of 1,800 students.
The Evergreen Park strike ccame on the heels of the Chicago and Lake Forest teacher strikes, which endured for a week-and-a-half and seven days, respectively.
Meanwhile, teachers in yet another Illinois district on Friday went on strike in Crystal Lake. Prairie Grove School teachers failed to arrive at a contract agreement with a federal mediator, the Tribune reports. The Crystal Lake strike impacts about 1,000 students ranging from kindergarteners to eighth graders.
