For most people, finding the perfect place to stay is often the most important aspect of vacation planning. Similarly the accommodation that is ultimately chosen typically dictates whether the vacation is deemed a success when they return home. After all, a bad hotel experience can ruin the entire travel experience.
Today there are so many different types of accommodation available to the discerning traveler - from hotels and motels of all sizes, to private vacation rentals, or even a room in someone's house. But what is out there for travelers who want to rest their heads somewhere a little out of the ordinary?
Like many of my colleagues at Fly.com, I am what you would call a travel enthusiast. I've not only visited some amazing places over the years, but I've also stayed in some really unusual accommodations -- including a tepee in the middle of Wyoming, a bunk on the HMS Rose (2001), a tent in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, an "outdoor" villa in Sayulita, Mexico and the truly weird and wonderful Cloud Nine room at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California.
That is why I was particularly interested in a deal that was published, back in the summer, for an overnight stay on the World War ll-era USS Hornet. And this got me to thinking about other strange and unique places where I could stay.
After some research, I've devised what is now my official accommodation bucket list. Fingers crossed, I'll be able to rest my head at one or more of these locations in 2013.
