SushiBot Machine Pumps Out Sushi At Astonishing Rate

Even as the world worships sushi masters like Jiro Ono, the 85-year-old star of the recent acclaimed documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," some developers are working to take the business of making sushi out of human hands. Manufacturing company Suzumo's latest creation is SushiBot, which can pump out up to 3,600 pieces an hour or 300 rolls in the same time.

The machine, which is on display at the World Food and Beverage Great Expo 2012 in Tokyo this week, is the company's most recent creation of the several it's made since 1981.

According to a YouTube video, Suzumo aims to precisely recreate the handmade taste and technique used by an experienced sushi chef."

But will Sushibot be putting chefs like Ono out of work anytime soon? Wired's Daniela Hernandez doesn't think so:

...it’s hard to imagine high-end sushi restaurants lowering themselves to the depths of what is essentially McSushi. The mechanical sushi assistants are clearly geared more toward all-you-can-eat joints, high-volume supermarkets, sporting venues, hospitals or schools.
