NEW YORK - A woman who was seriously injured by a shopping cart hurled from a fourth-floor New York City mall last year says she feels sorry for the two boys who tossed it.
Marion Salmon Hedges says she has never heard an apology from the boys, but wishes them well. She's speaking publicly for the first time since the October incident.
Hedges, who was in a coma, says she still has no vision in her left eye. She says she has a long way to go but that she's taking one day at a time.
The boys are 12 and 13 years old. One was sentenced to at least six months in a therapeutic foster home. The other boy was sentenced to at least six months in a therapy-oriented boarding school.
On Monday, a surveillance video stemming from the horrific prank revealed a third teenager, 14-year-old Achilles Baskin, trying to prevent the two boys from going forward with the assault.
Mayor Bloomberg praised Baskin for his heroic attempt, "He did what was right. He did what I hope you or I would have the courage to do. And he certainly did. He deserves our admiration."
Since her steady recovery, Hedges has expressed her concerns for both the economic and social conditions for the boys.
