Rupert Murdoch Celebrates 81st Birthday

Rupert Murdoch Celebrates Big Day

It's Rupert Murdoch's big day: the media mogul turns 81 on Sunday.

Murdoch may be happy to put the past year behind him. He saw his empire engulfed by crisis with the revelation that his News of the World tabloid hacked the phones of scores of public figures, including murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler. The scandal, which blew up last July, continued to snowball with allegations of police corruption and a massive phone hacking cover-up.

News Corp.'s troubles deepened in February, when journalists at the Sun were arrested in connection with bribing public officials. The company's handling of the charges and willingness to hand over its employees to the police ignited a near civil war at the paper. Rupert's embattled son James, who was once seen as his heir apparent as the head of News Corp., also stepped down as executive chairman of News International.

There have been some bright spots for Rupert Murdoch, too. News Corp. stock reached a one-year high in January, and he recently launched the Sunday version of the Sun.

HuffPost Media issued a call for birthday present ideas for Murdoch. Below, see some of readers' responses and other greetings for the big 8-1.
