In Woody Allen's recent film "Midnight in Paris," the main character comments how beautiful Paris
is on a rainy day. I could not agree with this more when looking back at Katy and Lawrence's wedding photos.
This lovely couple from California wanted a small intimate wedding abroad, away from the hassle of having to organize a large event back home for their family and friends. In fact, the wedding party consisted of the couple, the celebrant, a violinist, and myself. I began photographing Katy getting ready in her hotel room at the grand Art Deco-style hotel "Lutetia" located in the Saint-Germain-des-Pres district of Paris. During the makeup and hairstyling, we noticed ominous dark clouds approaching outside the window, hinting that an umbrella might be necessary. Just as Katy stepped out of the hotel's main entrance to jump in the antique French car that was waiting, the deluge began. The trip across Paris in this very old car with windshield wipers that barely did their job felt like we had been transported back to the Belle Epoque, again making me think of Woody Allen's film.
Anne from the wedding-planning agency "Fete in France" met Katy and me at the site of the ceremony, a classical Parisian row house complete with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Soft classical music by a violinist set the mood as Lawrence waited for his soon-to-be wife inside the home's main room. The ceremony was rather short and very intimate, exactly what the couple had imagined. The highlight of the day was the photo session in the city. The clouds and light rain added that melancholic feel that is so often Paris. We began at the Place du Trocadero with sweeping views toward the Eiffel Tower. It was a delight to have so few tourists in the way due to the inclement weather. We sputtered along in the old Citroen car to the Palais Royale gardens and finally ended at the timeless Passage Vivienne where I photographed Katy and Lawrence enjoying a glass of champagne à la Parisienne.
