Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green received a shocking health diagnosis shortly before the start of the 2011-2012 NBA season. During a physical, an aortic aneurysm was detected. According to a statement issued by the team, the 25-year-forward will undergo surgery on January 9 and will miss the entire season.
"While we are saddened that Jeff will not be able to play this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Jeff's case," said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge in a statement released by the team. "The entire Celtics family supports Jeff during this difficult time in his career."
Green joined the Celtics via trade last season after playing the first three seasons of his career with the Seattle Supersonics and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Georgetown product has career averages of 13.9 points per game and 5.5 rebounds.
Prior to the physical that revealed his heart condition, Green had agreed to a one-year contract with the Celtics. According to the Boston Herald, the contract will be voided because Green was unable to pass the physical.
According to the team, Green is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to participate in the 2012-2013 NBA season. After news broke about his health condition, Green addressed his situation on Twitter.
