Rabbi Warren Stone

Rabbi Stone has served as rabbi of Temple Emanuel in the Greater Washington, D.C. area since 1988, after serving congregations in California and Texas.

Rabbi Stone is known nationally for his leadership on Religion and the Environment. He serves as co-chair of the National Religion Coalition on Creation Care and is the founding chair of the Central Conference of American Rabbis’ Committee on the Environment. Rabbi Stone represented many national Jewish organizations as the Jewish United Nations delegate at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Kyoto, Japan in 1997 and later in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009 where he blew the Shofar and led a number of interfaith programs and prayer vigils. His abstract, "Climate Change Beyond Diplomacy: Thinking Outside the Box," was presented at the International Congress of Scientists in Copenhagen. Grist publication named Rabbi Stone as one of the world’s top 15 religious environmentalists.
In 2010 Rabbi Stone spoke the G20 World Religious Leaders Forum on Economic Sustainability in Seoul, South Korea at a world conference sponsored by the Global Peace Initiative of Women. He also spoke in Rome, Italy at the Vatican and US State Department Conference on, "Building Interfaith Bridges of Hope: Success Stories and Strategies for Interfaith Action." In December 2010, Rabbi Stone addressed a rally at the White House in support of climate action at the UN COP16 talks held in Cancun, Mexico. Rabbi Stone has published articles in newspapers, web news, blogs and journals including such publications as USA Today, Yahoo News, the India Times, Earth Day Network, the Jerusalem Post, the Washington Jewish Week, Reform Judaism magazine, the URJ blog, the Religious Action Center Blog, Grist Environmental News, Business Green, Central Conference of American Rabbis Journal. He has also appeared on the NBC Today Show. His article, "A Jewish Response to Climate Change," was published in The Climate Institute's book, Sudden and Disruptive Climate Change.

Rabbi Stone has led delegations on environmental issues to the Congress and White House and served on many boards, including the Global Advisory Committee for Earth Day Network, the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, the Washington Board of Rabbis, where he is past President, ARZA/ World Union and the advisory board for the District of Columbia Green Faith Initiative. He has served as Vice President of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington and served as a member of the board of the United Nations Association. He has also served on the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington and on the International Committee to Save Bangladesh.

Rabbi Stone graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. He received his M.A.H.L., Rabbinic Ordination and an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and a D. Min. in Religion and Psychotherapy from Andover Newton Theological School. He completed his clinical training in family therapy at the American Institute of Family Relations in Los Angeles and studied at the Jung Institute in Zurich Switzerland and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 2003 he received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
