Washington-based counterterrorism writer, editor and consultant
Michael B. Kraft is a Washington-based counterterrorism writer, editor and consultant with more than 30 years of experience working on terrorism issues in the State Department, Congress and the private sector. He previously served as a national security advisor for three Republican members of Congress (Senators Rudy Boschwitz, Clifford Case and Rep. Millicent Fenwick) and of the Senate Foreign Relations Middle East Subcommittee
During his 19 years in the State Department Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Mr. Kraft helped draft and enact major counterterrorism legislation and also worked on various programs, public diplomacy and regional issues. He is the co-author of U.S. Government Counterterrorism: A Guide to Who Does What” (CRC Press), the first publicly available description of the many USG offices and unclassified programs involved in counterterrorism. He also is co-editor of a major counterterrorism reference book, The Evolution of U.S. Counterterrorism Policy (Praeger Security International) and is working on an updated version.
After retiring from the State Department, Mr. Kraft worked at the National Defense University Africa Center for Strategic Studies, lectured at various civilian universities and consulted on various DHS and DOD projects. Mr. Kraft also contributed chapters for several other counterterrorism books as well as articles for various journals, newspapers and the Counterterrorism Blog. He previously served as staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Mideast Subcommittee and earlier as a Reuters and UPI correspondent in Washington, London and Central Africa. Mr. Kraft is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
