Dr. Lori D. Ungemah taught English in Brooklyn for 11 years in what politicians refer to as "failing" public schools; she stayed in those schools by choice. She left the Department of Education in 2011 to create and open the City University of New York's first new community college since the 1960's--Guttman Community College. Guttman employs multiple research-backed ideas of community college retention and success inside one college in hopes of boosting graduation rates. Dr. Ungemah has her undergraduate degree in Cultural Studies and French Literature from UNC Chapel Hill, a Masters in English Education from Brooklyn College, and a Doctorate of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is interested in curriculum studies, race and class, public education, secondary and community college transitions, and critical literacy. Other than academics, she is fond of cats, yoga, travel, any ocean, and cocktails. She lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and kids (who do attend public school).
