Kelly Cassidy

Serving in her first term as state representative of the 14th District, Kelly Cassidy has committed her career to public service by advocating for the rights of women and the LGBT community and fighting for a more effective and fairer criminal justice system.

As an openly gay legislator and devoted mother to three sons, Cassidy’s life experiences have provided her with a unique perspective and the enthusiasm to make a positive impact on the local community. Through her previous work with local, state, and federal officials, Cassidy has a firm understanding of the major issues facing Illinois and hopes to use her experience to help state government run more efficiently.

Prior to becoming state representative, Cassidy worked for 14 years in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, serving as the deputy director of Intergovernmental Affairs until 2001 when she became the director of Programs and Development. During Cassidy’s time as director of Programs and Development, she helped lead the office’s budget process, giving her insight into the impact of budgets on government policy. While her focus on fiscal responsibility and eliminating inefficiencies led to a lower overall office budget, Cassidy successfully found creative approaches to fund critically important programs. As the General Assembly continues searching for long-term budget solutions, Cassidy’s experience will be invaluable to improving the state’s fiscal outlook and getting the most out of the state’s limited resources.

From 1993 to 1997, Cassidy served as a legislative aide to state Senator John Cullerton. Cassidy managed the daily operations of Cullerton’s district office, working closely with elected officials and local leaders to address the needs of the community while responding to constituent concerns.

Prior to joining the public sector, Cassidy was the legislative director for the National Organization for Women in Chicago. There Cassidy developed a strong background in advocacy, developing issues and ideas into sound policy and legislation. Cassidy will use her legislative and constituent relations background to promote local concerns and be an accessible and available legislator.

Kelly has lived in the Edgewater community for 17 years. The 14th District includes the neighborhoods of Edgewater, Andersonville and Rogers Park.
