Julie Menin

Julie Menin is a civic leader in New York City and political television news commentator who has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, and the Fox News Channel and has appeared on The Today Show, The CBS Early Show, CBS Evening News, CNN American Morning, CNN Situation Room, Hardball, Larry King, and other programs. She is the former host of a national show on politics airing on NBC cable. She is also a frequent Op-ed Contributor and has written op-eds for the New York Times, Crain’s, The Daily News, NY Post, West Side Spirit, Crain’s, Our Town, and The Downtown Express.
Julie is also the Chairperson of New York City's Community Board 1 in Lower Manhattan. She was elected Chairperson of CB1 in a 2005 special election and unanimously re-elected to three successive terms in 2006, 2008, and in 2010. As Chair of CB 1, she spearheaded the building of 3 new public schools in her district, including New York's first "green" school, PS 276.

She led the effort to move the 9/11 trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed from Lower Manhattan. She exposed the fact that the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (on whose board she sits) was sitting on over $200 million which had been slated for Con Ed, and she successfully advocated to get the money allocated instead for Lower Manhattan needs. She has also helped build two new community centers in Lower Manhattan, three new playgrounds, a new ball field, a new public library branch. In addition, she led the community board on the rezoning of Northern Tribeca to preserve its contextual character and to build more affordable housing. In addition, she urged the city to launch a citywide community notification program to apprise New Yorkers of critical information in the event of an emergency which is now NYCNotify, and successfully led the effort to pass a bill in the city and state to mandate life saving epi-pens on all ambulances.

Julie is the Founder and former President of Wall Street Rising, a not-for-profit organization with 30,000 members dedicated to revitalizing Lower Manhattan in the wake of the events of September 11th. She currently serves on the following boards: the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, Municipal Art Society, Downtown Alliance, WTC Memorial Foundation, Governors Island, Women’s Campaign Forum, Columbia College Alumni Board, Downtown Hospital and Citizens Union.

Formerly, she was a regulatory attorney at Wiley, Rein & Fielding in Washington DC and at Colgate-Palmolive in NY. She graduated with a degree in political science magna cum laude from Columbia College at Columbia University and received her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law.

She was named by City Hall newspaper as one of the city's "40 Under 40" Rising Stars in New York politics. Julie was voted by the New York Resident as one of the "100 Top New Yorkers", was named NY1's "New Yorker of the Week", and her civic awards include the Women's Campaign Fund's "Rising Star" award, the City Women's Club's "Civic Spirit Award", A.C.E.'s 2008 "Public Service" award, Manhattan Youth's "2008 Public Service Award”, the 2010 League of Conservation Voters award and Citizens Union 2010 Civic Leadership Award.
