Former US Senator
Former United States Senator Harris Wofford graduated from the University of Chicago and earned law degrees from the Howard University and Yale Law Schools. In 1949, he and his wife Clare had a fellowship to India the year after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. Together they wrote the book India Afire. He became a champion of adding Gandhi's strategy to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, and is also the author ofOf Kennedys and Kings: Making Sense of the Sixties. He was an adviser to both Martin Luther King and John Kennedy. After helping Sargent Shriver plan and launch the Peace Corps, he served in Addis Ababa as Peace Corps Representative in Africa. President of two colleges, SUNY Old Westbury and Bryn Mawr College, Wofford later served as CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service and now advises the Franklin Project of the Aspen Institute.
