Let it never be said that Walt Disney wasn't ambitious. Hot on the heels of 'Snow White' and 'Pinocchio,' two fairy tales that translated well on the big screen, Disney decided to experiment with his successful medium. 'Fantasia,' a pops concert in animated vignettes, was born, with no less a conductor than Leopold Stokowski enlisted to put on the show.When the film tanked, Disney vowed that he would give up "caviar" for "mashed potatoes and gravy" and return to more conservative projects. But the film's esteem has grown steadily over the decades--fine arts fans, as a rule, act slowly but inevitably--and today it seems as avant-garde as any of the Stravinsky on its soundtrack.
