Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is seeking to turn attention back toward Republican opponent Donald Trump’s treatment of women ― something that has fallen out of the news in favor of coverage of the controversy over her email practices.
On Tuesday, Clinton will appear with former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, who Trump demeaned for gaining weight both in the 1990s and September, after she criticized him publicly. Clinton’s speech is billed as an address on American security, but campaign officials said it will also highlight Trump’s past statements on women, including the more than a dozen women who have accused him of sexual assault.
The Clinton campaign also released a new ad highlighting comments Trump made about women, set to air in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
It’s largely a series of clips of some of Trump’s greatest misogynist hits, some of them repeats of an ad Clinton released in September that showed young girls looking themselves in the mirror as audio played of Trump mocking women for their looks.
But it also highlights the news since ― accusations that Trump sexually assaulted multiple women, and his 2005 boast, unearthed in October, that he “can do anything” to women, including “grab them by the pussy,” because he’s a star that cost him dozens of Republican endorsements. It also features a 2005 clip of him talking about barging in on dressing rooms at the Miss USA pageant, which he once owned, and seeing naked women, some of them under 18.
“Anyone who believes, says, does what he does is unfit to be president,” text over the footage in the campaign video reads.
Clinton has a clear reason to want to turn the attention back to Trump. On Friday, FBI Director James Comey announced that the agency is reviewing more emails potentially related to an investigation into her use of a private email server as secretary of state, for which he previously recommended no criminal charges.
Clinton said Monday that “there is no case here.”
“Lots of noise. Lots of distractions. Throwing stuff at me,” she said during an event. “And we’ve just got to keep people up, moving and voting.”
