Mom Breastfeeds Sister's Baby, Online Commenters Freak Out

Clearly, people have mixed opinions about wet nursing.

A seemingly harmless breastfeeding photo is stirring up a lot of controversy on Facebook.

On Saturday, the Facebook page Breastfeeding Mama Talk posted a photo of a mom nursing her infant nephew.

“In some weird chain of events today I ended up breast feeding my sisters son while she was away, because he would not take the bottle his momma pumped him,” the mom explains in the caption.

“In return because my son won’t latch and is strictly fed bottles I pump, my sister was able to feed my son her perfectly good pumped milk. Which made for two very happy and content babies,” she concludes.

The post received over 10,000 likes on Breastfeeding Mama Talk. The backstory, however, prompted a lot of debate in the comments section. While many commenters applauded the mom and shared their own wet-nursing stories, several naysayers weren’t quite so on board with the concept.

“Too weird. Idk about nursing someone else’s child tbh,” wrote one commenter. “That’s kinda gross,” added another.

In response to the negativity, Breastfeeding Mama Talk founder Kristy Kemp offered her thoughts on the matter. “Wet nursing has been done since the beginning of time people,” she wrote in a comment. “I understand if wet nursing isn’t something you think you would ever do or want to do, but that being said, most of the time wet nursing is done is because it’s NEEDED. It’s because for whatever reason the mom can’t breastfeed in that moment or at all.”

“Instead of talking about all the ways you think it’s gross, wrong, or weird, how about we encourage these moms and commend them for getting their babies nourished to the best of their ability,” Kemp added.

Here’s to moms supporting each other, however they feed their babies!
