Texans Want To Change Name Of Street Because It's... Gay

Ughz.

A small group of Texans (who apparently don't have a lot going on in their lives) just lost a fight to rename a street in their city currently known as "Gay Drive."

Eleven people signed a petition in Pharr, Texas, that called on their City Commission to rename the street. The petition was launched by Maria and Mel Villarreala, a couple who has lived on the street for 40 years.

Unfortunately for the unhappy 11 residents, the Pharr City Comission struck down the proposed name change in a vote from 6-1.

"The word 'gay' used to be a word that the meaning was being jolly, being happy, and now they've added another meaning to it and they define themselves as 'gay people,'" Mel Villarreal said in the above video. "I don't have anything against gay people, it's just that it has that meaning."

The couple reportedly plans to continue to fight to rename the street, which they hope to call “Los Unicos" after Villarreal's former band.

It's nice to see that even the most subtle forms of homophobia aren't met with validation these days. Thanks, Pharr!
