Scarlett Johansson's 'Iron Man 3' Appearance Not In The Cards?

Scarlett Johansson Won't Return For 'Iron Man 3'?

Scarlett Johansson's "Iron Man" dalliance appears to be over. For now.

The actress -- who plays Black Widow in the Marvel universe and has a sizable role in "Marvel's The Avengers" -- co-starred in "Iron Man 2," but likely won't appear in "Iron Man 3."

According to the site ScreenRant, Johansson began a recent interview by saying she wouldn't have time to return for the next Marvel blockbuster. During the video-taped portion of the chat, however, Johansson did allow that a Black Widow movie would be something she'd be very keen on doing.

"I think you build this character with the hope that the fans want more," Johansson said. "I personally think there is an awesome Black Widow movie in there, that is kind of a 'Bourne' type of film, that I think will take the whole comic book genre in a completely different direction."

While there is no confirmation that Johansson won't co-star in "Iron Man 3," she hasn't been mentioned in any of the recent casting stories about the film. Tweeted Variety reporter Jeff Sneider, "Yes, ScarJo will spend late May/early June filming [Joseph Gordon-Levitt's] movie, not IRON MAN 3 ... Did that movie really need Black Widow? Nah."

To that end, "Iron Man 3" has a ridiculously large cast. In addition to star Robert Downey Jr., the film is set to feature appearances from Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and maybe even Jessica Chastain.

"Iron Man 3" is due out next year; "Marvel's The Avengers" is in theaters next week.
