Yesterday during geometry, I checked Twitter as I periodically do when class is kind of slow, and I saw the news. The Texas same-sex marriage ban had been ruled unconstitutional by a state judge. In that moment I was more proud of being a Texan than I have been in a long, long, time. I started tweeting and retweeting all the breaking news articles and equality accounts I found.
I couldn't focus during the rest of school. My mind racing with thoughts of my state's progress. If my red state can have gay marriage, any state can. This also furthers the point that national gay marriage is inevitable and we should be embracing the progress we're making. Of course, conservative Texas politicians lashed back, some so caught up in the moment they didn't realize their Twitter typos. Lieutenant governor candidate Dan Patrick first tweeted "MARRIAGE= ONE MAN & ONE MAN. Enough of these activist judges. FAVORITE if you agree. I know the silent majority out there is with us!" There's a new position for a social media intern for his campaign now.
I hope today's ruling is also an omen for Texas's future. Times are changing. It's time we had government officials who don't make me embarrassed to live in Texas. It's time for love and equality to sweep through the nation like wildfire. Until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream we will not stop. I have hope for our future. My generation is one of tolerance and acceptance. Make way for the new era. Liberty and justice for all.
