Anti-choice, anti-abortion, right-to-lifers still abuse my right to choose.
This year I intended to post some of the awesome happenings in New York City that celebrate the extremely powerful Supreme Court decision on the Roe v. Wade case. After some consideration, that first piece swirled down the pipes.
It began something like this:
"As the 38th anniversary of the landmark case Roe versus Wade approaches, there are a few radical events you may want to support. The anniversary, on the 22nd of January and these events are only days away..."
However, after lamenting the murder of abortion-provider Dr. Tiller, I thought otherwise. I thought about the persistent harassment and attacks on women who try to enter clinics and perused about many of the hateful anti-woman, anti-feminist, anti-choice "tweets," as well as blog responses.
After I asked a friend for her thoughts, she validated that my concerns were legitimate. We, as women, are still terrorized about our right to choose to have an abortion. We are still abused because of our right to choose what happens to our bodies.
Why is there a NEED for abortion clinic defense? Women in the outer boroughs of Manhattan are still harassed and intimidated by anti-abortion, anti-choice and religious protesters. These protesters try to prevent women from entering women's health care clinics. The NARAL Pro-choice America website expresses the need for pro-choice support volunteers to escort women into clinics due to these tactics.
I live in a country where it is OK to distribute "WANTED" posters that not only display photos of abortion service medical providers, but include their names and addresses. Does this fall under the U.S. right to terrorize? It sounds more like a death warrant for clinic workers. The only thing neglected on the poster is the actual bounty.
The New York City NOW Chapter always lists different events and lectures that are going on in the metro area.
Check out the Trust Women Campaign, which asks men and women to wear a silver ribbon in solidarity.
As U.S. citizens, we need to take a look at our progressive society, where humans are protected under the law and have the right to choose not to be silenent.
