Men's style on the street in Portland is all about layering for the fast pace change in weather during the autumn season. The PDX male has to be prepared to shift gears, so I talked with local actor, model and stylist Dee Holland about some of the key elements in his fall fashion wardrobe.
So tell me what trends are Portland men wearing?
I'm seeing plaid everywhere and I really don't know how I feel about plaid so, I chose a plaid umbrella, to me fall fashion is mostly about layering.
I start the day deciding if it is a day for jeans, what shoes will I wear based on whether I plan to be outside walking and do I need a pullover sweater because of the varied weather conditions.
So how do you keep you hair looking so great in the rain?
Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. Just drop a dime size in your palm, rub your hands together, then work up and under the hair, not on the top, which will leave your hair looking slight pasty and matted down.
Wow, what else?
I like to wear a watch. I know a lot of my guy friends watch the clock on their iPhones but I think an essential part of a men's wardrobe is his watch. I'm not a big fan of wearing a scarf but I've gotten used to wearing a scarf because of Portland's weather. So now I have lots in many colors, patterns and textures.
What about the Portland bow tie trend?
I'm still stuck wearing neckties. I make it simple for myself and break it down into two basic ways to wear a necktie, a Windsor knot (Large) or the 50s skinny knot. (Small)
What are the five key fall fashion elements for Portland's man on the street?
- Jackets: Tweed, denim and leather are my three favorites
- Trousers: Khaki, corduroy and dark denim
- Two tone shoes: Crazy add on for some and wildly individualist
- Pullovers: Argyle, bold stripes and solid colors or a tweed vest
- Accessories: Watch, hats, sunglasses, neckties, umbrellas and lots of scarves
