Hilary Duff returned to television with a guest spot on "Raising Hope" that The AV Club called "charming." She played Rachel, one of Jimmy's ex-girlfriends from years back. They'd been in a long-distance relationship that broke off suddenly. She came back into his life when Sabrina revealed that the two had become friends. Neither had any idea of Jimmy's connection to the other.
When Rachel showed up for a visit, though, things got even weirder. She recognized Burt and Virginia as well, only she knew them as Lance and Sally.
"I am embarrassed," Maw Maw said. "I have been calling them Burt and Virginia for, like, 30 years."
It turned out that Burt and Virginia hated when Jimmy got his heart broken by girls who were out of his league. So they spent his life sabotaging those relationships. Rachel was just another one, though it required an elaborate long con to pull it off. They had to enroll in her college -- as Lance and Sally -- and convince her to break it off with Jimmy.
It was all too much for Rachel, who left the whole family to their craziness. But Duff looks to be planning a more permanent return to the small screen. She recently signed a development deal with 20th Century Fox to create her own sitcom.
