Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 10, Episode 7 of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," titled "Thriller."
It's Halloween at Grey-Sloan and there are zombies, maggots, little girls getting almost scared to death and the ghost of Heather Brooks to make this episode feel, in April's words, completely random, and not at all supernatural.
But there's some method to the madness. The first half hour feels disconnected and full of schtick and the last scenes open up new plot lines and close some others.
Murphy and Arizona are having a little fling, and it looks like it might be fun, if it weren't for Leah trying to force being "easy." It never works, Murphy, take it from me. But a drugged 'zombie' bites her and she has to take an HIV rapid test and wait for his results. Arizona finds her and bonds with her, and for the first time, Leah seems almost normal. And yes, she's negative on all accounts.
There's an old lady with asthma looking for Heather Brooks, who had been treating her under the table. Shane ends up finally getting some closure on the Brooks ordeal and promises to help her from now on.
Alex runs around yelling at patients' dads and Jo. It's very uncomfortable to watch and no sign of James Remar. Jo shows up in a sexy Tinkerbell costume and apologizes to Alex for making a bad call about his dad.
Weber asks the interns to do a surgery on him and Bailey flips her lid, calling them all bonkers and blind (since Stephanie had lasik). She doesn't think the interns are up to it; Weber finally takes her off the surgery, since she's blocking the interns from learning. He apologizes to Meredith and asks her to take over.
Ben is back because he quit his residency. He hangs out with Derek and they sew butterfly wings and bond over the idea of being a sort-of-stay-at-home dad. Bailey is furious and tells him she's disappointed in him.
The writers are wasting no time on Cristina Yang -- is she going to leave before the season's even over? She brings cupcakes, as per Meredith's request, to the daycare kiddie party. But she walks in and everyone's fussing over the babies and she leaves, heads to the bar, and Shane buys her tequila. I hope they can keep it platonic.
- I'm glad that Ben's back because I want a happy Bailey. What is wrong with her these days? She's always been stressed but with a sense of humor. Now, she's just tough, mean, and sad and not in a good way.
- Same goes for Yang. Where's our girl? She's walking on eggshells around Meredith, analyzing texts like a fifteen year old girl and feeling sorry for herself. Again, not in a good way.
- The interns are sort of coming into their own but it's still not convincing when they have their bonding scenes. Stephanie and Murphy lament their situations -- ruined eyesight, possible STI infection -- and it's almost there, but not nearly as witty or heartfelt as Yang and Grey, or anyone else.
Ho-hum, despite the maggots. What do you think Callie's going to do when she finds out about Arizona and Leah? She's been so level headed so far, it's time for her to snap.
