Journalist David Brooks On The Inverse Logic Of Life: The More We Give, The More We Get (VIDEO)

WATCH: Why Landing The Perfect Job Shouldn't Be Your Biggest Worry

The conversation about the Third Metric and redefining success continued at the Ideas Festival in Aspen as Arianna Huffington sat down with writer and New York Times columnist David Brooks on Thursday afternoon.

Brooks gave some insight into his talk later in the day on the "inverse logic of life," or the idea that the more we give of ourselves, the more we receive in return. He elaborated on a column he wrote earlier this month entitled "Religion and Inequality," which introduces a different hierarchy of success -- one which transcends material measures.

"In the New Testament, Jesus blesses the poor, “for yours is the kingdom of God,'" Brooks wrote, "But 'woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.'" He argues that Americans' focus on external wealth over developing their internal lives is what may leave many "successful" people feeling ultimately unfulfilled.

Get his thoughts on who won the battle for gay marriage, how to beat social segmentation, the rise of libertarianism and more in the full interview above.
