We love it when actresses go against the grain and try out wildly different characters. And those who remember sweet Ugly Betty will be in for a big surprise when America Ferrera takes the stage in Bethany.

In her new off-Broadway production, America will play Crystal, a troubled single mom fighting bankruptcy and a turbulent home life. And even though the character has to lie and cheat on a regular basis, she’ll more than likely win over the audience.

“She’s a really fantastic female character who gets to mess up and not be likable all the time and feel really human,” Ferrera told Time Out New York. “[Crystal] really resonated with me on a personal level, on a cultural level, and on a political level—with what the feeling is right now in this country.”

No matter how dastardly Crystal gets, it’s virtually impossible to not like an America performance. Let’s hope the Tony voters have their eye on Bethany, which plays at the New York City Center through February 17.
