Pink Panther Car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Up For Auction Online

Pink Panther Car And Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Up For Auction

First the Batmobile gets put up on eBay, now the Pink Panther car and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are up for auction online -- and they're projected to go for $570,000.

Bidspotter.com will host the auction, which is set to run from Sept. 4 through Oct. 14.

Fans of the television show "The Pink Panther" might rejoice at the opportunity to own the iconic pink car, but there's a catch: It can't be driven on public roads.

The "Panthermobile" might not be "street legal," but it is the original vehicle used in the series, which ran from 1969 to 1976.

Interested parties can expect to start bidding at noon.

The guide price is set at 50,000 pounds to 100,000 pounds (about $80,000 to $160,000), according to Bloomberg.

Fans might have better luck cruising down city streets in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, if they can get it started.

It's been more than a year since the replica has been driven, and it needs some restoration, Bloomberg reports.

The 2000 replica of the notorious car might not be the real thing, but it was modeled after the six cars used in the 1968 Dick Van Dyke movie, and it's valued between 100,000 pounds to 250,000 pounds (about $160,000 to $400,000).

Why are the cars up for auction? A private collector reportedly stopped making the payments on the vehicles, and the finance company that funded the purchase had to break the contract.
