Charinez Jefferson, Pregnant Teen Killed: Group Raises Money For Surviving Infants

How To Help The Surviving Baby Of Slain Pregnant Teen

Charinez Jefferson, a 17-year-old with a big smile, was walking with through the Marquette Park neighborhood on Chicago's South Side Tuesday night when a man ran up to them and started shooting. Charinez, reportedly around six months pregnant at the time, was killed.

Doctors were able to deliver the boy she was carrying, and he's now fighting for his life. Jefferson also had a one-year-old child who is in the care of her family.

Now, a local organization that deals with violence against women and children is rallying the community together to help Jefferson's surviving babies.

United for a Cause (UFAC), founded in 2008, has supported victims of crimes and their families and helped with the search for missing children. On Friday, they're hosting a donation drive for Charinez's family, gathering clothing, diapers, baby wipes and other necessities, according to NBC Chicago.

"We at Ufac are stepping up to help this family out with the daily needs of these children," founder Dawn Valenti wrote in a press release.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday night at St. Sabina's Church, 7801 S. Throop St, the release says.

Meanwhile, police continue to search for Charinez Jefferson's killer. So far, no suspects have been detained.
