The Handwritten Letter Project Helps Keep Written Words Alive

In our world of e-mails, texts, and tweets, the art of the handwritten letter has, for the most part, been abandoned. Since the emergence of the Internet and cellular phones some twenty years ago, people have traded in their pens for keyboards and touch screens.

However, in 2007, Craig Oldham began The Handwritten Letter Project, which, as he puts it, “extended an invitation to designers and creative thinkers alike to simply write and make known their thoughts posed.” Since then, the website has collected a ton of handwritten letters and posted them online for the world to see and in turn get inspired to write some of their own.

This month, another website is doing something else to keep the romantic gesture of the handwritten letter alive. You simply send an e-mail to the team over at Snail Mail My Mail and they will transcribe the e-mail for you into a handwritten letter and send it to whoever you’d like, completely free of charge. You can even personalize the letter with a flower petal, a lipsticked kiss or a spray of perfume.
