The latest development in the ongoing investigation into former U.S. Senator John Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter comes in the form of a series of voicemails that allegedly provide evidence of the former presidential candidate's involvement in the cover-up effort.
In the messages, provided by WTVD, Edwards is supposedly heard calling to check in on his aide, Andrew Young, who at the time was watching over Hunter and her child, who would later be revealed as Edwards' daughter.
According to the Associated Press:
The Justice Department is trying to determine whether to prosecute Edwards over payments his donors made to keep his girlfriend, Rielle Hunter, and their daughter in hiding during the 2008 campaign.
Earlier reports had suggested that an indictment for Edwards over his supposed role in coordinating the effort to hide Hunter would be on the immediate horizon.
And while it remains to be seen if the voicemails, in which Edwards mentions billionaire heiress Bunny Mellon, who is alleged to have sent hundreds-of-thousands of dollars to fund the cover-up, will play any part in the federal grand jury investigation, Edwards appears to be bolstering his legal defense.
On Wednesday, Edwards brought President Barack Obama's former lawyer, Greg Craig, on board his legal defense team.
