I am currently serving on the Transportation Research Advisory Board at the National Academies of Sciences. Serving on this board is very exciting. It gives me an opportunity to make a contribution in the field of aviation - which has been a great love of mine for years.

Here's how much I really like aviation: I had several student internships at NASA. While completing my Harvard doctorate in Applied Mathematics, I took flying lessons. Later, while on the faculty at MIT I was also selected as a semi-finalist for the NASA astronaut program. In addition, I spent some time as a faculty member doing research and working as a Welliver Fellow at Boeing.

So you see, I really like aviation! For graduate students who share my love of aviation, please apply for the Graduate Research Award Program on Public Sector Aviation Issues. The purpose of the Graduate Research Award Program is to encourage applied research on airport and related aviation system issues and to foster the next generation of aviation community leaders.

The program is intended to stimulate thought, discussion, and research by those who may become the future airport managers, operators, designers, and policy makers in aviation. The focus of this research program is on applied research to help the public sector continue to improve the quality, reliability, safety, and security of the U.S. civil aviation system well into the foreseeable future.

Please learn more about these student research opportunities here.
