Mayor Bloomberg had some verbal knives of his own to throw in the reinvigorated debate over gun control.
Bloomberg has renewed his call for stricter gun laws after the Tucson shooting. His efforts drew the ire of NRA Political Director Chuck Cunningham, who called Bloomberg "Mayor Blame" and accused him of shirking his responsibility to keep New Yorkers safe.
The Mayor responded to Cunningham's criticisms in an interview with MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell.
"The truth of the matter is they don't pay any attention," Bloomberg said of the NRA. "The Constitution says you have a right to bear arms, the Constitution talks about a well-regulated militia. A well-regulated militia isn't a bunch of people that have clips that hold 38 bullets for their Glock handgun in their home."
Bloomberg also asserted that New York is "one of the safest big cities in the country."
"We have had less than 600 murders on a basis of 8.4 million people," Bloomberg noted.
In 2009, New York was ranked the nation's safest big city, according to FBI crime statistics. Crime rates have risen more recently.
"Democracy is being able to walk the streets without looking over your shoulder," Bloomberg said. "And if everybody's armed, I don't think you're going to be able to have that." Bloomberg called the NRA's fierce lobbying operation and Congress' unwillingness to do battle with them "quite mind-boggling."
The Mayor also said he felt President Obama missed an opportunity when he refrained from mentioning gun control in his State of The Union speech.
