Nicki Minaj On Her Abusive Father: 'Lived In Fear My Mother Would Be Killed By My Father'

Nicki Minaj: I Feared My Drug Addict Father Would Kill My Mother

Nicki Minaj is tough for a reason.

The rapper/singer spoke at length with the British paper The Sun, discussing in frank terms the scary childhood she spent around an abusive, drug addict father, and how it shaped her, both with men and fans.

"All of my young and teenage early years we lived in fear that my mother would be killed by my father. It was ridiculous... It was very tough emotionally for me to have a parent who was an alcoholic and a drug addict... My father was violent - physically and verbally."

The abuse, she said, didn't stop until her brother was old enough and big enough to challenge her father. And while she still bares the scars of that childhood, it's made her tough -- both with men, and in her self-confidence:

"A lot of fans say they like me because I don't give a damn what they say about me. As a teenager you spend so much time worrying about what people say about you," Minaj told the paper. "Whether you are overweight, whether you feel ugly, whatever it is. You know what? I am a bad bitch. I don't care. Go f*** yourself."

Minaj has spoken about her abusive father before; in the December issue of Rolling Stone, she told of a desperate childhood:

When I first came to America, I would go in my room and kneel down at the foot of my bed and pray that God would make me rich so I could take care of my mother," Minaj revealed. "Because I always felt like if I took care of my mother, my mother wouldn't have to stay with my father, and he was the one, at that time, that was bringing us pain."
