"Bob's Burgers" premiered last night on Fox, and right off the bat, a few things were noticeable about the much-hyped animated program. The first was its lack of the name "Seth MacFarlane" anywhere in the credits -- MacFarlane currently dominates 75% of the network's Sunday night animated programming, with "Family Guy," "American Dad!" and "The Cleveland Show" joining "The Simpsons," currently in its 22nd season.
But despite the absence of ADD-laden cutaways and exaggerated pop culture references, "Bob's Burgers" may still seem strangely familiar. That's because the creative force behind the show, Loren Bouchard, previously helmed the beloved "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist" and Adult Swim's "Home Movies." In addition, the executive producer of the show, Jim Dauterive, was a longtime producer on "King of the Hill."
Bouchard re-teams with "Home Movies" star H. Jon Benjamin in "Bob's Burgers," which follows the day-to-day hijinks of a greasy spoon diner owned and operated by the titular Bob (voiced by Benjamin) and his less-than-dedicated family.
The show features an ensemble of comedy darlings in its voice cast. In addition to Benjamin, "Bob's Burgers" features the talents of Kristen Schaal, Eugene Mirman, Dan Mintz and John Roberts, all of whom are well-known for their sharp comedic chops as well as for unique vocal characterizations. Fellow esteemed comedians Andy Kindler and Larry Murphy round out first episode's cast. Bouchard enlisted writers whose comprehensive credits include "The Onion," "SNL" and "The Daily Show" among other sources.
The debut episode sees the restaurant celebrating its "Grand Re-Re-Reopening" after a series of mishaps, but the celebration is short-lived, as rumors that the restaurant is serving human flesh begin to circulate.
