The staff at the London Zoo certainly have their work cut out for them: they are currently in the process of counting each and every one of their animals. According to the UK Press Association, this process could take up to four weeks.

The staff counts the stock annually at the beginning of each calendar year in order to tell whether they're breeding too many of the animals or not enough, a staff member told BBC News. They also do it to ensure that they have the exact number of every animal they are supposed to have.

Counting all of the animals is guaranteed to be a tricky process. The zoo is home to over 16,000 animals from over 700 different species. It has over 10,000 invertebrates, 4,700 fish and 100 reptiles.

Here's a look at how the count is going so far.
