Jorge Torrez, Man Linked To Zion Murders, Gets Five Life Sentences In Virginia

Man Linked To Zion Killings Gets 5 Life Sentences In Va.

The ex-Marine who is linked to the murders of two Zion, Ill. girls in 2005 was sentenced last week to five consecutive life sentences for separate crimes committed in Virginia.

Jorge Torrez, 22, was found guilty of abducting and raping a woman earlier this year. In the sentencing, Arlington County Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Kendrick called Torrez a "coward" and imposed the term recommended by the jury.

But, he may not have had his last day in court.

This summer, information surfaced linking Torrez to the grisly rape and stabbing murder of two young girls, Laura Hobbs, 8, and Krystal Tobias, 9, in 2005. According to Torrez's attorney, prosecutors in Illinois have DNA evidence linking him to the crime.

That new evidence prompted, among other things, the release from prison of Jerry Hobbs, Laura's father. Hobbs had been held since the time of the murders, as authorities said he confessed to the crime; he is now suing the Lake County police, claiming he was coerced by physical and psychological torture into making the confession.

Torrez was linked to the crime after his DNA was entered into a national database following his arrest in the Virginia charges.

In that state, on February 27, he approached a 23-year-old University of Maryland grad student, pointed a gun at her, tied her up, and put her in the back of his SUV. He then raped the woman, choked her unconscious, and left her for dead in the Virginia snow.

She was not dead, though; the student survived, and testified against Torrez in the case.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Torrez would be eligible for parole in Virginia in a little over 40 years. But if he is brought to Illinois and convicted of the murders of Hobbs and Tobias, he will certainly not be.
