What Tori Spelling's Kids Know About Fame

While ‘90s TV fans knew Tori Spelling for the hit drama "Beverly Hills, 90210," today’s viewers know her more for her reality show with her husband, Dean McDermott, and their brood of kids. But do her four children -- Finn, Hattie, Liam and Stella -- know their mom is famous? The reality show star tells "Oprah: Where Are They Now –- Extra” that they don’t quite understand the concept.

“My children do know that we are seen on TV, they do know that we’re in magazines,” she says. “I don’t think they know the word famous…and I don’t really care about them knowing the word famous. That doesn’t matter to me.”

Tori says the topic has been coming up more and more, because her kids are seeing people coming up to her -- and that gets them curious.

“They do ask questions,” she says. “’Why do people know you? Why did someone come up to you and call you Tori? How did they know your first name?’ That has become a question that they all ask.”

So how does this celebrity mom explain to her kids why strangers take such an interest in her? Tori says she likes to think that her work inspires people, and so when people come up to her and talk to her about it, they’re like an extended family.

“I show the kids that it’s not an odd thing -- I don’t want them to be taken aback when people come up to us. They see me embrace people. But I also explain to them that they know me because I write books, because they see me on TV, because they think that what I do is great and they respect my work…and it’s a good thing.”

"Oprah: Where Are They Now -- Extra" is a digital series from the OWN show "Oprah: Where Are They Now?"
