Man Reportedly Dies Shielding Mother From Gunfire

A Chicago man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon while shielding his mother from bullets, according to family members.

Dietra Luckett told the Chicago Sun-Times that her nephew, James Jones, "took his body and put it on top of [his mother's] body. He covered her body.”

A Chicago Police department spokesman would not comment on Luckett's story or identify the victims. The spokesman confirmed that a 21-year-old man was killed and a woman was critically injured. The man was pronounced dead on the scene, he said.

Police are still investigating the shooting, but the Sun-Times said it was gang-related.

Luckett said that her sister, Alicia Jones, had not yet been told of her son's death. Luckett told the Chicago Tribune that two of Jones' four children had been killed in earlier violence.

At least 21 other people were shot this weekend in Chicago.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article stated that 21 people were killed in shootings in Chicago. Most of the shootings were not fatal.
