Trent Edwards out, Ryan Fitzpatrick in

Finally, by the grace of something, Chan Gailey announced that Trent Edwards would spend some indefinite, quality time on the bench and Ryan Fitzpatrick would suit up and hit the turf in the hopes that he would actually throw the ball down the field.

In BillsChick's typical, dramatic fashion, my reaction to this news went a little something like this (try to stay with me).

[To my sports editor at work] "Shut up! You're lying to me right now. That's not even ok to do. Stop."

Upon seeing the headline for myself, I transitioned into:

"Oh happy day. (Oh happy day) Oh happy daaayyyy. (Oh happy day)."

Don't ask me why a Sister Act song about Jesus washing my sins away popped into my head-my mind is a convoluted place. I then started silently singing:

"Where it was dark now there's light. Where there was pain now there's joy. Where there was weakness, I found my strength. All in the eyes of a boy. Hush, love, I see a light in the sky. Oh, it's almost blinding me..."

The "WTF moment" you're having right now is totally justified; I had one myself after realizing I parlayed an obvious QB switch into a Celine Dion ballad. Listen, I never claimed to be normal or make sense. My final response was an all-out vocal performance of Luther Vandross (this is not a joke):

"A lovely day. (Lovely day. Lovely day. Lovely day) Gonna be a lovely day. Lovely day. Lovely day. Lovely day."

Don't ask me why I handled the situation by singing the most random songs on my iPod, I don't get it either, but it happened and it was better than the alternative, which would have been a rant about how this should have happened weeks ago, blah blah blah, you've heard it all from me before.

This is why I think the switch is long overdue and will help the Bills turn around their rough start to the season.

-Lee Evans and Fitz seem to have a better football relationship than the Evans/Edwards match up. Evans has had little to no action these first two weeks. Yet last season, Evans had four of his seven TDs from Fitz and caught 341 of his 612 yards from him. It should be nice to put what offensive talent we have, to good use.

-Fitz is just a little more fearless. He's not shy when it comes to taking risks and launching the ball down the field when he has the opportunity (and sometimes, even when he doesn't); don't forget that 98-yard TD pass to Terrell last season. He also had 1,422 yards and 9 TDs last season after taking over for Edwards Week 10, with 10 interceptions and 21 sacks. I understand those numbers don't exactly land him at the top of the league, but I'm more apt to forgive those blunders when he's thrown into a tumultuous situation unexpectedly-there's always a period of acclimation and let's hope he got that out of the way last season and can jump right in Sunday facing New England.

The funniest part of this entire scenario (for me at least) is that...wait for it...Edwards was SURPRISED.

"It surprised me," Edwards said. "I understand it's a business and we need a win and we need a spark and that's what I was told by Chan."

Seriously? He was surprised?! This just reaffirms my belief that those multiple concussions incurred lasting damage more serious than anyone else-besides myself-seems willing to admit.

The switch was done civilly and Edwards was a good sport about it, saying he'd "handle it professionally" and would be ready to go in the catastrophic event Fitz doesn't work out.

GO BILLS!!!
