For a time, it seemed Peggy Olson had finally found a romantic and creative equal in Ted Chaough, but there's rarely a happily-ever-after on "Mad Men," and it all fell apart when Ted moved to California with his wife and left Peggy behind. And that was for the best, according to actor Kevin Rahm, who plays Ted.
A newly-divorced Ted returned to New York this season, but the spark with Peggy is totally gone. Rahm told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri on Tuesday that Ted hurt Peggy too badly to return to the relationship, and Ted would have only held her back anyway.
"She always kind of had to be alone for her character to grow even more," he said. "Her whole time on the show had been in relation to the men she was with, and I think it's interesting to see her as a woman standing on her own two feet."
Rahm added that Ted always had Peggy's best interests in mind, even when he was breaking her heart.
"Ted was always trying to do what he thought in the moment was the right thing," he said, "and that included telling Peggy, 'I'm going to leave my wife, I love you, I'm going to make this work.' And that also included him telling Peggy, 'I'm going to leave so you can go on with your life, and you're going to be better for it.'"
