Jennifer Iacovelli knew her two young sons were going to have a hard time getting used to their newly separated parents. To help make the uncertain time a little less uncertain, she did everything she could to provide the boys with some normalcy. They huddled up on the couch every Friday night to watch their favorite reality shows and trekked through state parks all throughout summer vacation.

"Even if dad wasn’t there, I wasn't about to let the turmoil of divorce and a move ruin that summer," Iacovelli told The Huffington Post.

Below, the HuffPost Divorce blogger shares what else helped her and the boys get through the first few months after divorce.

"There’s a playlist I put together that I called Goodness. I made it was right before I found out my marriage would be ending. It’s sort of ironic, really, because I had no idea the end was so close. And, yet, the songs were so fitting. The one song that really became my anthem during the divorce was 'Wake Me Up' by Avicii. The line "All this time I was finding myself, And I didn't know I was lost' still gives me the chills every time I hear it."

"There are so many inspirational quotes that kept me going while I went through my divorce. In the thick of it, the one that I always went back to was 'Do no harm (but take no shit).' Coming to an agreement with my ex was not easy and I was determined to stay on the high road. I stood strong, stayed away from the harm I could have caused, but didn’t take any shit either."

"Besides sports, the one show my ex and I religiously watched together was 'Deadliest Catch.' When the new season started without him in the house, my boys asked if we could record it so that they could watch it with me. On Friday nights we’d cuddle on the couch, eat popcorn and watch the latest episode. As I went through my divorce the only two things I was concerned with were me and my boys. Those nights kept everything in perspective."

"There was no reason this divorce needed to ruin my boys' summer. Though the six months I spent going through my divorce felt like a horrible full-time job, my boys and I managed to have one epic summer. This photo is one of my favorites from our summer adventures. We spent a lot of time by the ocean and at state parks. It was our escape."

"My ex was the main cook and the one who did the grocery shopping in the house. Luckily he used to take the kids with him so they could show me the ropes when I had to start shopping for our food. I used to hate grocery shopping. The best part about taking over the shopping was that I got to choose and cook whatever food I wanted without any judgment whatsoever. Sometimes it’s the little things that give you strength."

"I think the best purchase that was made during the divorce was a Maine State Park pass. The result was our epic summer. After the divorce was final and our accounts were split, I focused on getting myself stronger at a non-traditional gym. It was the first thing I did for myself in a long time. Doing zercher squats with a log in the snow on an icy river in Maine in the dead of winter? Empowering beyond belief."

My true therapy during my divorce experience was my writing. I have a collection of haikus that I wrote that I have yet to share with anyone. It allowed me to get my emotion out and record some of the events that were going on in a quick and creative way. Once I wrote, I could let the emotion or experience go. Time will tell if I ever share that writing."
