Last year, 18-year-old Kristen Layne found the perfect dress for her junior prom at White House High School in Tennessee. But when Kristen put the dress on sale on Facebook to raise money for a new prom dress for senior year, she encountered the kind of Internet cruelty every high school student dreads.
According to Seventeen, Kristen posted this photo of her junior prom dress on the Facebook group "For Sale In Sumner County, TN":
The dress had made Kristen feel like a princess. So she was shocked when some of the Facebook group's members started insulting her photo. Kristen told WSMV that "[T]hese two men were just saying some very hateful things, just telling me I was fat and that I wasn't beautiful."
Kristen stood up for herself, writing, "Can you please stop with the comments? Sorry that I'm not pleasing to your eye." The rest of Kristen's community quickly united behind her. Friends posted positive, loving comments like, "It's obvious this woman is beautiful, inside and out." Others wrote to Kristen, saying she inspired them to overcome their own body image issues:
WSMV reports that community members also raised nearly $400 to help Kristen buy a brand new princess dress for senior prom.
Kristen's story proves that having true friends > having a fairy godmother.
