FRIDAY, JULY 16
Jorge Pardo's Bulgogi
Gagosian Gallery (Beverly Hills)

The opening reception for a new mixed media installation by Jorge Pardo entitled Bulgogi. The exhibition takes its name from a traditional Korean dish which Pardo uses as a metaphor for Korean immigration and cultural assimilation in Los Angeles.

SATURDAY, JULY 17
Soundings: Bells at the Hammer
Hammer Museum (Westwood)
11am-7pm
The Hammer Museum and Machine Project invite the public to participate in a day-long sound installation, everyone in a place, by composer Chris Kallmyer. All visitors will be issued a small bell, which they can wear as they move through the galleries, courtyard, lobby, and other public spaces, and will be accompanied by additional bell related sound pieces including circulating ice cream carts, animatronic Santa bells, and an African bell ensemble. Admission to the museum will be free of charge to all participants.

The opening reception for a new exhibition organized by Walead Beshty entitled Picture Industy (Goodbye to All That), featuring artists Tauba Auerbach, Thomas Barrow, Carol Bove, Troy Brauntuch, Tony Conrad, Abraham Cruzvillegas, De Rijke / De Rooij, Liz Deschenes, Isa Genzken, Wade Guyton, Robert Heinecken, Karen Kilimnik, Imi Knoebel, Michael Krebber, Glenn Ligon, Erlea Maneros Zabala, Albert Oehlen, Manfred Pernice, Seth Price, Richard Prince, Josephine Pryde, R.H. Quaytman, Eileen Quinlan, Miljohn Ruperto, Michael Snow, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Charline Von Heyl, Kelley Walker, James Welling, Christopher Williams, and Christopher Wool.

Kori Newkirk
Country Club (West Hollywood)

The opening reception for artist Kori Newkirk in the gallery's ongoing project series. Newkirk presents works that touch upon fracture, abstraction, labor, the body, science and science fiction while simultaneously ignoring, questioning and commenting on the modernist architecture of the gallery in Rudolf Schindler's 1934 Buck House.

California Design Biennial: Action/Reaction, Desire: Six Los Angeles Artists and Megan Geckler: Every move you make, every step you take.
Pasadena Museum of California Art (Pasadena)
7-10pm
Opening reception for three new exhibitions, including the 2010 California Design Biennial: Action/Reaction which has asked notable design professionals to curate each category in response to the exhibition's theme, describing designs that respond to current events in a sociopolitical, economic, creative or innovative way. Also see Desire: Six Los Angeles Artists, an exhibition exploring the theme of desire in Los Angeles, and Megan Geckler: Every move you make, every step you take, site-specific projects blurring the boundaries between art and design.
