Strong Earthquake Strikes Near Indonesia

Strong Earthquake Rattles Indonesia

A 7.1-magnitude undersea earthquake hit about 90 miles from Indonesia on Saturday morning. After initially saying tsunami waves were possible for areas along some coasts of Indonesia, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center deemed that the threat had passed.

Initially rated a magnitude 7.3, the earthquake struck at around 10:00 a.m. at a depth of 29.2 miles, 96 miles from off the coast of Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A magnitude 5.9 quake followed later. Waves of up to 3 feet were predicted along some parts of the Indonesia coast, but the latest advisories maintained no considerable waves were expected.
