Teen With Down Syndrome Voted Homecoming King Just Months After Brain Surgery

On the last weekend in September, 18-year-old Evan Parker, who was born with Down syndrome, was voted homecoming king at Salem High School in Michigan, donning a blue crown in front his cheering classmates.

It was the highlight in an otherwise extremely difficult year for Parker and his family. In October 2013, he had a stroke, and in January, he underwent a 16-hour brain surgery, reports Detroit news outlet WXYZ.

After this challenging time, Parker's classmates came together to honor him. There is also a wealth of support for Parker on Twitter.

Parker's parents were equally thrilled by his homecoming win.

"Evan is such a positive person," Parker's mother, Lauren, told WXYZ. "He's always making other people happy. It was one of the greatest things, everyone cheering. It was unbelievable."
